New Varieties Showcase to spotlight exciting new plant introductions at Farwest

Improved performance in production environments and landscape, compact sizes, enhanced disease resistance, performance in urban settings, drought tolerance ... These are just some of the plant characteristics that will be on display at the New Varieties Showcase at the 2015 Farwest Show, taking place August 27–29 in Portland, Oregon.

Of particular interest to garden retailers, consumer appeal is far more compelling, with 49 new plant introductions showing sensational foliage, blooms, seasonal interest and the overall wow factor. Plants are creatively displayed in retail fashion with full descriptions. Though new to the market, all submissions will be available for ordering from at least one Farwest Show exhibitor and are all in large-scale production. Take-it-with-you tags from HIP Labels make it easy to find the growers and/or breeders at the show, so you can place orders for fall or next spring.

"Year after year, attendees gather in the New Varieties Showcase at Farwest to evaluate, photograph and discuss the latest and greatest new selections to hit the market," said Crystal Cady, event and member services manager at the Oregon Association of Nurseries, producers of the Farwest Show. "This year's chosen selections are sure to generate buzz across the market, as they are some of the hottest new varieties making their debut into consumers' hands. We're excited to have so many cool new plants as a part of the show and can't wait for attendees to be 'wowed' by the display created."

A team of retailers, landscape designers and growers will evaluate the varieties and award the top picks. In addition, Farwest attendees may vote their favorites for the People's Choice Awards.

Farwest offers a tour de force of nursery and retail tours

Farwest Show organizers have scheduled off-site tours for attendees on Wednesday, August 26. The tours offer a range of focus for the industry, from nursery/greenhouse growing to landscape and garden retail. Three tours will take place simultaneously, giving participants choices for their particular interests:

Tour 1: All About Those Brands (8 a.m.–6 p.m.) is designed for retailers seeking highly marketed branded collections and growers considering becoming a licensed grower for a brand.

Tour 2: Not Your Usual Suspects (8 a.m.–6 p.m.) will bring together wholesale growers, high-end landscapers and garden retailers to see the must-have plants for next year.

Tour 3: Retail Walking Tours (half-day; choose morning or afternoon) will be led by retail industry expert Anne Obarksi and tour of some of Portland's top-notch retailers – both inside and outside of the industry.

"This year's tours showcase the best of what our industry offers and there's something for everyone," said Allan Niemi, director of events at the Oregon Association of Nurseries, producers of the Farwest Show. "Whether you're a grower, landscaper or retailer, you'll see innovation and ideas at every stop. It all leads to more success for our attendees and their businesses."

Retailers wanted for Farwest merchandising and container contests

The Farwest Show has stepped up its offerings for retail attendees, and show organizers would love for participating retailers to be part of the action! Two of last year's retail showcases — Merchandising Match and Chopped! Container Garden Competition — were huge hits and have been brought back for this year's show. Participants will once again battle it out in short competitions to prove their skills and take home prizes.

But we can't do it without you! We are looking for retailers to participate in the competitions. Four spots are available for merchandising and four for the container garden contest. Competitions take about 30–45 minutes and winners are announced right away! Merchandising Match competitions are Thursday and Friday at noon, and the Container Garden Competition is Saturday at 11 a.m.

He began as CEO of OFA in 2010, then became president and CEO of the combined organization when the merger became effective in January 2014.

"As some of you know, I grew up connected to the horticulture industry so this was not an easy decision for me," he told Greenhouse Grower. "I have loved working with our organizations and our talented members, staff and partners. However, my choice to return full time to Washington, D.C. will allow me to be closer to my family and aging parents and to re-engage with another industry I also care deeply about."

Ball Horticultural Company purchases Conard-Pyle

Ball Horticultural Company announced the purchase of Conard-Pyle, the plant development company that brought the Knock Out® family of roses to market and has specialized in the genetics and sales of proprietary roses, perennials and woody plants for over a century.

The acquisition combines Ball's strength in woody ornamentals with Conard-Pyle's market-leading position in roses. Among the acquired assets of the sale are Conard-Pyle's in-house breeding division NovaFlora and its intellectual properties, as well as the distribution, production and administration facilities of its wholesale division.

"Conard-Pyle's leading genetics, long-standing relationships and nationwide network of customers have made it a valuable brand in the marketplace," Cees Boonman, president of Ball Seed, said.
