Seattle bans use of neonicotinoids on city property

The Seattle City Council voted Monday to approve Resolution 31548, which bans the use of neonicotinoid-class insecticides on city property. Seattle joined city governments in Eugene, Oregon and Spokane, Washington, which have taken similar action within the last year.

Seattle officials said their pest control practices up to now have employed very minimal use of neonics. They see the ban as a first step toward preventing harm to bees, other creatures, and people. The resolution further stated that the council supports a national moratorium on use of the chemicals.

The OAN and the Washington State Landscapers and Nurseries Association (WSLNA) opposed the ban, arguing that neonicotinoids are an essential tool against destructive pests, and that the science proving stated harms to others is inconclusive.

In Oregon, OAN Executive Director Jeff Stone serves on a pollinator health task force appointed by the governor, which is expected to issue recommendations later this fall.

Voter registration deadline approaching

There are less than three weeks remaining for eligible people to register to vote in time for the November 4 election. The deadline is Tuesday, October 14. Measure 88, the Oregon Driver's Card legislation, is among the items on the ballot.

We urge all voters who are members of the nursery industry to vote yes on Measure 88. It is important for the industry, as well as the safety of Oregon roads. The measure will provide a safe and legal means for Oregon residents who qualify as drivers to obtain a driver's card and insurance, so they can drive to work, school and church. Oregon Senate confirms Stone to serve on SAIF board

Last week, OAN Executive Director Jeff Stone was confirmed by the Oregon Senate to serve on the board of SAIF Corp., the state-owned workers compensation insurer. Stone was appointed to the four-year post by Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber. "I am honored to be nominated by the governor and hope to bring a collaborative voice to the five-person board," Stone said.

Others added to the board include Jenny Ulum, a Eugene public relations executive, and Maurice Rahming, the co-owner of O'Neill Electric, a Portland contractor.
