U.S. Rep. Bonamici learns about nursery worker shortages

U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Oregon, 1st Congressional District) visited Eshraghi Nursery in Hillsboro last week and learned firsthand about the work nursery employees do, as well as the worker shortages nurseries are dealing with currently. She also visited Farmington Gardens, a retailer owned by the same company.

The visit was arranged by the Oregon Association of Nurseries, and included a roundtable discussion with the representative and several nursery owners. Also present was a reporter from the Hillsboro Tribune, who published an article covering the visit.

Linda Eshraghi, owner of Eshraghi Nursery, said the nursery doesn't get enough applicants for the work that needs done. "We have a sign out all the time that says 'help wanted,' and nobody comes in and says, 'Hey, I'm looking for a job,'" the newspaper quoted her as saying. "It doesn't happen."

Bailey Nurseries expands breeding operations, announces Bailey Innovations

Bailey Nurseries is expanding and rebranding its in-house plant breeding and development program. Formerly known as Plant Introductions Inc., it will now be called Bailey Innovations.

The operation will be moved to a new location. Bailey has purchased the Winterville, Georgia farm of Transplant Nursery and will move the program there.

"By renaming our product development arm, it puts a greater focus on one of our primary objectives: bringing the best woody ornamentals to market," Bailey Nurseries President Terri McEnaney said. "We've worked very hard since purchasing PII to strengthen our offering of new shrubs through vigorous testing, creative breeding, and tireless research to determine consumer demand. Bailey Innovations will continue that work and introduce only the best new varieties through Endless Summer® Hydrangeas, First Editions® Plants, Easy Elegance® Roses and other partners."

Plant Introductions Inc. was founded in 2007 by Dr. Michael Dirr, Jeff Beasley and Mark Griffith, who continue to work with the program. It was purchased by Bailey in 2015. The existing genetics from PII will be folded into Bailey Innovations.

At the 2017 OAN Convention, members will have the opportunity to vote on bylaw revisions that are intended to modernize the association's governance structure. The most significant change would call for representation on the OAN Board of Directors based on industry segments, rather than geographic regions.
