Multiple problems plague Port of Portland's container terminal

Terminal 6 at the Port of Portland used to be one of the main gateways for Oregon's agricultural goods to the export market. But today, because of a number of reasons, the terminal sits idle, leaving the state's farmers and other exporters vying for other ways to ship their goods to the world.

Labor disputes, insufficient cargo, and turmoil in the global shipping industry are just a few of the problems keeping the Port's container terminal from coming back online, according to a story published last week by Capital Press.

OAN President Leigh Geschwill was quoted in the article. She said the Port's problems have had an indirect effect on the nursery industry, specifically in the number of trucks available in the area.

According to a 2016 study, the cost of trucking goods to other ports has cost Oregon businesses about $15 million a year.

"We found little to no negative effects on overall wages and employment of native-born workers in the longer term," said Francine D. Blau, an economics professor at Cornell University who led the group that produced the 550-page report.

California expands overtime to farmworkers

California Gov. Jerry Brown recently signed a bill, the first of its kind in the nation, which will entitle California farmworkers to the same overtime pay as most other hourly workers in California. Beginning January 1, 2019, most people employed in an agricultural occupation will be entitled to overtime pay after working more than nine and one-half hours in any given workday or more than 55 hours in a workweek. In subsequent years, the number of hours that farmworkers must work prior to entitlement to time-and-a-half pay will be gradually lowered.
