International Trials Conference speakers and tours announced

Dr. Allan Armitage will deliver the opening keynote address at the 2015 International Trials Conference, to be held August 24–27 in conjunction with the 2015 Farwest Show in Portland, Oregon. Other plant experts also speaking include Diane Blazek, Marshall Dirks, Pat Hayward, Jim Ault, Susie Raker, Jonathan Pedersen and many more.

Bus tours will showcase premier trial garden sites and nurseries in the heart of Oregon's nursery country. Stops include the International Rose Test Garden, the oldest publicly operated rose test garden in the U.S.; OSU North Willamette Research and Extension Center; Fessler's Nursery; Terra Nova Nurseries; and Swan Island Dahlias, the largest dahlia grower in the U.S.

It's time to renew your OAN Nursery Guide listings! Each OAN member gets a free profile and one free listing. Last year the site had more than 126,000 visits and 652,000 pageviews.

On, you can add, drop and update listings at will throughout the year. All listings that are renewed by May 1 will appear in the annual OAN Nursery Guide book that is mailed to members and subscribers and distributed at the Farwest Show and other industry events.

Get the most out of your membership with the 2015 OAN Member Resource Guide

The newly updated 2015 OAN Member Resource Guide contains contact information for chapter boards and committee rosters, as well as general information about the organization. It's a handy resource for members who would like to take advantage of benefits, such as the Legal Access program or fuel discounts, or are looking for marketing, education and training opportunities. The guide also outlines the OAN's government and media relations initiatives, and puts faces with the names of OAN staff members.

OAN to host meeting on NWREC nursery position — May 6

The Oregon Association of Nurseries and Oregon State University invite you to attend this meeting on the Professor of Nursery Production position at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC). Bill Braunworth, department head at OSU's Horticulture School, and Mike Bondi, NWREC director, will lead the meeting and review last fall's unsuccessful search, as well as possible changes to the position description and announcement that will go out in the next round.

Free agricultural pesticide waste collection for six area counties — May 22

Residents of Polk, Yamhill, Marion, Benton, Linn and Lincoln counties can register to drop off pesticide waste and containers from 8 a.m.–2 p.m. Friday, May 22, at the Polk County Public Works, 820 S.W. Ash St., Dallas. Participants must pre-register by Friday, May 8. Azalea lace bug nymphs spotted in Oregon

Azalea lace bug nymphs have been spotted in Oregon, according to Robin Rosetta of the OSU Extension. "Folks should start monitoring in earnest and be prepared for intervention soon," Rosetta said. "After they hatch (eclose) the nymphs stay and feed together for a bit. This is a key timing for intervention with 'softer' contact insecticides such as insecticidal soap and horticultural oil."

Reminder: Tonight is Retail and Greenhouse chapters meeting

The Retail and Greenhouse chapters will host their first meeting of the year tonight — Wednesday, April 22 — at McMenamins Old Church & Pub, 30340 S.W. Boones Ferry Road, Wilsonville. Join your friends and colleagues for dinner followed by a round-robin presentation detailing the newest plant introductions on the market for 2015 and what's coming down the pike. Presenters include Terra Nova Nurseries, Fisher Farms, Log House Plants, Van Essen Nursery and more!

Help us promote gardening at the Spring Garden Fair in Canby

We need your help! The Oregon Association of Nurseries will have a Plant Something booth at the upcoming Canby Spring Garden Fair on Saturday and Sunday, May 2–3, at the Clackamas County Event Center (aka the fairgrounds) in Canby.

This gardening event featuring some 170 vendors will be open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Volunteers will receive free admission to the event. Shifts will last about three hours. We will be giving out copies of the Retail Nurseries and Garden Centers Guide and various other doodads designed to excite the gardening public.

UDSA reminds nursery growers of May 1 crop insurance deadline

The USDA's Risk Management Agency would like to remind nursery growers of the May 1 deadline to purchase crop insurance. Nursery growers who already have coverage under the federal crop insurance program need to renew or modify their crop insurance policies before the sales closing date has passed. Growers applying for coverage for the first time may purchase a crop insurance policy at any time.

Willamette Chapter Plant Sale at AgFest

The Willamette Chapter will hold its annual Plant Sale at the Oregon Ag Fest on Saturday and Sunday, April 25–26, at the Oregon State Fairgrounds (2330 17th St. NE, Salem). Your generous donation of plant materials helps raise money for the chapter's educational fund. Blooming plants are the best, although all plants are needed and welcome.
