Industry professionals converge at the Farwest Show

For nursery professionals who wanted to "Be Far From Ordinary," the 2017 Farwest Show had much to offer. The event brought together groups, businesses and even individual job seekers, some fresh out of college. In all, nearly 6,000 people attended.

"It's great when people in the industry can converge, share their knowledge, make new connections, and renew the relationships they've established previously," Show Director Allan Niemi said. "The green industry is made of strong fabric and that's due to the lasting connections people make, beginning with a face-to-face encounter and a handshake."

"This is what the Internet cannot do," said Show Chairwoman Denece Messenger of Decorative Bark Products Inc.

Gov. Kate Brown visits with OAN members at Farwest

Oregon's thriving green industry had Gov. Kate Brown's full attention last Thursday morning at the Farwest Show. She spent a full hour discussing various issues of importance with members of the OAN Government Relations Committee.

"Your team has done an excellent job in terms of building relationships with legislators, agency folk and people across the state," Brown said.

Brown touted the bipartisan transportation package passed by the Oregon Legislature as a major achievement that will help move people as well as products. The OAN supported this package. "I was pleased that rural Oregon, urban Oregon, Republican Oregon and Democratic Oregon could come together on this package," she said.

Also on her mind was the critical issue of water supply development to meet the needs of cities as well as agriculture. OAN supported these efforts, too.

The Legislature approved $50 million for water supplies but Brown added that much more needs to be done, including greater resources for the state Water Resources Department. It's been difficult to bring some Legislators to the view held by OAN and other water user groups who have been working together to address supply.

"I need, frankly, more pressure on the Legislature," she said. "I want to work with you, frankly, to create that."

The governor also touched on added funding for the Oregon Health Plan, new investments in technical and STEM education, the importance of workforce housing, and encouraging a stronger FEMA response to droughts the past three years.

Walla Walla Nursery Co. Inc. wins best booth at Farwest

Walla Walla Nursery Co. Inc captured the coveted Ted Van Even Best in Show booth award at the 2017 Farwest Show. The nursery won for its rich, plant-festooned booth that surrounds visitors in plant-covered walls. It also features a train set that winds its way around plant-covered tables, "delivering" sedums to market.

"The Farwest Show invites people to 'Be Far From Ordinary,' and Walla Walla Nursery did exactly that," show director Allan Niemi of the Oregon Association of Nurseries said. "They went the extra mile to showcase the richness and diversity of the nursery industry in the Pacific Northwest, as well as the strong, green focus of the Farwest Show."

Walla Walla Nursery also captured a Best of Division award for Best Island Booth, Grower.

Trump expected to announce end of Dreamers program

President Donald Trump is expected to announce, as early as Friday, that he will end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, according to a report by Reuters. The program grants work authorization to residents who are not documented, but can demonstrate they were brought to the United States as small children. If the program is indeed terminated, those who have gained this status still would be able to stay until their work permit expires, according to the report.

Former President Barack Obama created the program via executive order, saying that it fell under his power to prioritize how immigration laws are enforced. Trump had promised during the campaign to end the program, but relented following the election and during the early days of his administration.
