OAN awards nominations due today

Do you know someone who deserves recognition for making the nursery industry better? Our industry is made up of an incredible group of hardworking people constantly driven to improve their business, help their neighbors and contribute to our shared success. The OAN awards process is designed to recognize these people in a variety of categories, but we need your help to identify them!

The official OAN awards nomination form is available here: (Word | PDF). Completed forms must be returned no later than today (October 1, 2014). Your OAN Awards committee will review every nomination as a critical aspect of the selection process.

Please join us when we honor these recipients at the 2014 OAN Convention/President's Awards Banquet on Friday, October 24. We hope to see you there!

Genuine Farwest attendee list available from OAN — and only OAN

Recently, OAN members have reported receiving solicitations from outside companies offering to include them in Farwest Trade Show guides, or to sell them a list of Farwest Trade Show exhibitors or attendees.

If you receive such an offer, please evaluate it very carefully. The OAN does not endorse or work with these outside vendors, and does not provide exhibitor or attendee information to them.

"In recent years, we have seen a number of scams that prey on trade show exhibitors," Farwest Trade Show manager Allan Niemi said. "If you have any questions about a solicitation you have received, please feel free to call us directly."

The only genuine list of 2014 attendees is available directly from OAN. If you were a Farwest Trade Show exhibitor for 2014 or have put down a booth deposit for 2015, you may purchase it. Click here for more information.

ONPAC endorses candidates, measures in 2014 election

The Oregon Nurseries' Political Action Committee (ONPAC) announced its endorsements for the 2014 general election.

Candidate endorsements were largely based on candidate positions on key issues, including the driver's card, water supply development, water quality regulations, support for Oregon State University Extension and the state natural resource agencies, tax policy, and support for transportation infrastructure. The resulting endorsements include 52 candidates for the Oregon Legislature, who include members of both parties.

"ONPAC has consistently taken the view that candidates should be endorsed based on issues, rather than a party affiliation," said Josh Zielinski, chairman of ONPAC. "We have a longstanding reputation for bipartisanship. We take ownership of issues affecting the nursery industry, and all of agriculture, and work collaboratively with other stakeholders to find the fairest and most effective solutions."

ONPAC also endorsed Gov. John Kitzhaber, U.S. Rep. Kurt Schrader, Measure 88 (Oregon Driver's Card), and Clackamas County Measure 3-347 (community college bond measure). It recommends a No vote on Measure 92 (GMO labeling).

Voter registration deadline approaching

There are less than two weeks remaining for eligible people to register to vote in time for the November 4 election. The deadline is Tuesday, October 14. Measure 88, the Oregon Driver's Card legislation, is among the items on the ballot.

We urge all voters who are members of the nursery industry to vote yes on Measure 88. It is important for the industry, as well as the safety of Oregon roads. The measure will provide a safe and legal means for Oregon residents who qualify as drivers to obtain a driver's card and insurance, so they can drive to work, school and church. OktoberPest workshops begin this Thursday

Starting this Thursday, Oregon State University and the North Willamette Research and Extension Center will present pest management workshops each week during the month.

Leading off is the first workshop in a three-part Pesticide Applicator Training Series designed for existing and prospective Spanish-speaking pesticide applicators. Part one will cover pesticide label comprehension. Dr. Luisa Santamaria of OSU's Department of Botany and Plant Pathology will familiarize attendees with each section of a pesticide label, introduce the various types of pesticides and teach common pesticide terminology and definitions.
