OAN to offer Worker Protection Standard training

The Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP) at Oregon State University is offering upcoming training sessions on changes to the Worker Protection Standard, which will take effect on January 1, 2019. Pesticide handlers and agricultural workers need this training annually, according to the new rules.

The training will be offered Tuesday, October 30 at the Linn County Expo Center in Albany; Wednesday, October 31 at the OAN offices in Wilsonville; and Monday, November 5 at Lane Community College in Eugene. Other training opportunities will be offered as well. Please check the emt.oregonstate.edu/PSEP website for up to date information and upcoming trainings in 2019.

Each day of WPS training includes the following sessions, each with separate registration:

  • WPS Basics for Agricultural Employers
  • WPS Handler Training — English
  • WPS Handler Training — Español

Each individual session is $25 per person and advance registration is required. No cash will be accepted at the door. Priority will be given to those who are working in the nursery or specialty crop industries.

Daniella Whanger of the PSEP will present the training. Funding for the training comes from a specialty crop block grant via the ODA. Materials are being created through OAN's partnership with SAIF Corporation.

The new rules are mandated by the federal government but must be implemented by each state in the manner it chooses. Oregon chose to set requirements that exceed federal mandates. Employers may view a WPS overview webinar and download training materials for pesticide handlers and agricultural workers.

The OAN has been providing ongoing updates to members, including at last year's OAN Convention. For more information, check out our resource page on the Worker Protection Standard: www.oan.org/wps

WPS Compliance Assistance Library

The 2015 revised Worker Protection Standard (WPS) is complex. PERC broke it up into bite-sized chunks and sorted user types to tailor the learning experience for workers, handlers, employers, and more.

Just for You:

PERC's WPS Compliance Assistance Library (WPS CAL) is web-based guideto help people on farms, orchards, forests, and other agricultural establishments comply with the WPS. The material and content has been reviewed by federal regulators, farmworker advocacy organizations, university experts, and state agriculture officials. However, users are cautioned not to rely on any one resource for compliance information. Please refer to the official "How-to-Comply" Manual and the  regulation, then contact your state regulatory agency with questions regarding compliance with the WPS.

If you have any questions about navigating the WPS-Compliance Assistance Library, please direct them to PERC at PERCsupport@ucdavis.edu.
